CASH Lined Up For Historic Libraries’ Next Chapter

26 August, 2019 | News, Listed / Historic Buildings

£1MILLION is set to be spent on two historic Glasgow libraries.

The money has been earmarked for the facilities in Parkhead and Elderpark, Govan, by city officials and comes from Glasgow’s share of a Scottish Government fund aimed at supporting town centres.

Elderpark, above, would receive £550,000 and Parkhead £450,000.

A report seeking approval from councillors stated: “This funding will be used to reinvigorate and re-purpose the historic buildings which contribute significantly to town centres, but which are currently not meeting their full potential for community benefit.”

Elderpark and Parkhead libraries are both listed buildings within conservation areas and within areas of multiple deprivation.

Both are subject to current discussions regarding re-purposing to ensure they address community needs.

The report continues: “Funding will ensure the buildings are in reasonable condition for expanded community use and also allow their function as libraries at the heart of town centres to be enhanced for the future.”
