PLANNING permission has been given for the next major building to be developed at Glasgow University’s new £1billion campus.

Glasgow City Council  have given the go-ahead for the Adam Smith Business School and post graduate teaching hub which will front Dumbarton Road on the site of the former Western Infirmary.

The 11,500-square-metre building will have six floors, providing around 800 new teaching seats, 350 work and research seats and numerous informal, meeting, social and collaboration spaces.

A design statement submitted to Glasgow City planners explained: “The building will become a key anchor of the new Gilmorehill expansion and will serve as part of the gateway to the campus.

“It will not only provide a new home for the Adam Smith Business School, but provide much-needed active teaching and learning spaces for the whole of the university.”

The statement continues: “The Adam Smith Business School (ASBS) is currently housed within the Gilbert Scott building. In order to support its aspirations to become a top-50 world-leading business school by 2030, it is understood by the school and university that a facility to support this vision needs to be provided.”

The university’s website states: “The new Adam Smith Business School building will be a facility fitting for the legacy of the father of economics, Adam Smith.

“It will further the aim of the Adam Smith Business School, as research-led, professionally focused, and supporting graduates to become leaders in business and policy, influencing organisations as they develop and grow globally.

“The proposed new development will develop three mutually-supporting pillars: corporate connections, learning and teaching innovation, and research culture and environment.”

The university’s new Institute of Health and Wellbeing was approved in October.

Work is well underway on the first major building at the site — the Research Hub.
