A MAJOR high-quality office development has been approved for Glasgow’s International Financial Services District.

Soller Four Limited have been given planning permission in principle for a multi-storey building with public plaza between Carrick Street and Brown Street, just up from the Broomielaw. The site is vacant land currently being used as a car park.

Around 200,000 square feet of office space would be provided over 12 floors of open plan office space plus a ground floor with entrance hall and combined retail/office space.  There would be basement car parking spaces.

A document submitted by Mosaic Architecture and Design, on behalf of the applicants, stated: “The development of the current vacant site on Carrick Street in Glasgow presents an economically-viable opportunity to address the ready demand for commercial accommodation within Glasgow city centre.

“The introduction of a new public plaza linking Brown Street and Carrick Street will complement the recent masterplan for urban renewal within the ‘Broomielaw Quarter’ area of the city.

“The redevelopment of this city centre site will not only increase the city’s commercial offering, but will be of benefit to the surrounding area by contributing to the rising quality of Glasgow’s urban streetscape.

“The new public realm will be a high quality landscaped area with a mix of seated areas, planting, trees and public art. It is also envisaged that this space may provide an opportunity for outdoor ‘pop-up’ events.”

The statement continues: “We anticipate that the provision of high quality, flexible office space in an attractive city centre location will entice new businesses to the Broomielaw Quarter.

“The new public plaza is envisioned to provide a dynamic external space for the building and surrounding area, which will improve the overall urban experience.”

The application was approved by city council planners.
