SPECIALIST living room furniture retailer Sofology want to open their first Glasgow store in the east of the city.
An application has been made seeking permission to demolish five buildings at 2239 London Road and develop a single new 1,486-square-metre retail unit on a portion of the site fronting Fullarton Lane.
Sofology is part of the DFS group which has a store on the adjacent site. A document submitted to Glasgow City planners states: “The proposed furniture showroom will benefit from the proximity of similar retailers, allowing customers to undertake comparison shopping as part of a single trip. Indeed, the proposals will help to create a furniture destination in this location.”
It continues: “The proposed new retail unit will be modern in appearance, positioned in the north western corner of the site and orientated so as the long frontage elevation faces London Road.”
The site currently comprises various commercial/business units including a traditional Victorian red sandstone building fronting London Road and more basic warehousing to the rear, occupied by flooring retailer Direct Flooring, a gym, a tattoo parlour and a vehicle repair garage. An area within the site is also used as a car wash facility.
The proposals involve closing the existing vehicle access on London Road on the southern boundary of the site and having a new vehicle access on the western boundary from Fullarton Lane. This will allow reinstatement of the footway along the southern section of the site.
An enhanced footway would also be introduced along the eastern side of the Fullarton Lane carriageway with dropped kerbs and tactile paving supporting a pedestrian crossing over the proposed vehicle access.
A new zebra crossing will be provided to the north of the proposed vehicle access which will support access to facilities on the western side of Fullarton Lane and provide a direct link between the proposed Sofology and the DFS/Dwell/Sofa Workshop stores adjacent.
A new 41-space car park would be formed in the southern section of the site.
Sofology’s only West of Scotland store is in Paisley.
The proposal is pending assessment by council officials.
