UPGRADE Approved For Prominent Mixed-Use City Centre Building

A HIGH-profile Glasgow City Centre building is getting a makeover to make it more attractive to potential office tenants.

Planning permission has been given for external alterations and refurbishment of Empire House, on the corner of West Nile Street and Sauchiehall Street.

The six-storey mixed-use building has offices on upper floors and seven commercial units at ground floor level.

A statement submitted to the planning department by architects 3D Reid explained: ” “While the ground floor retail continues to trade well, a number of office leases have recently expired and it is recognised that, while the building is in an excellent location for access to transport and other facilities, the current office accommodation can no longer compete with modern quality office space in this part of the city.

“As such it is [applicant] George Capital (Glasgow) Ltd’s intention to upgrade and refurbish the office element to create modern, flexible office space, with a new entrance and building identity, while retaining successful aspects of the original building.”
