WEEKEND Road Closures For Glasgow University Learning Hub Construction

29 August, 2019 | News, Universities and Colleges

A BUSY West End road will be closed to through traffic for two weekends while work takes place on a massive new Glasgow University building.

University Avenue will be shut in both directions between Ashton Road and University Gardens over the weekends 31 August/1 September and 14/15 September. The pavement will remain open for pedestrians.

The closures — from 6am on the Saturdays to 6am on the Mondays — are required as part of construction of the £90million James McCune Smith Learning Hub.

The building will feature a 500-seat raked lecture theatre, four flat-floored lecture theatres and numerous spaces for learning. The facility will have capacity for more than 2,500 students and will also be able to function as a high-quality conference venue.

It is named after American abolitionist and doctor James McCune Smith who was the first African American to receive a medical degree, graduating from the University of Glasgow in 1837.

The hub is part of the university’s £1billion campus redevelopment and is due to open in late 2019.
